honeymoon in paradise

Thailand is for (LGBTQ+) lovers: Have the most exciting and exotic honeymoon ever

Thailand has long been considered one of the world’s most inclusive and LGBTQ+-friendly countries. Welcoming to all and dedicated to harmony and respect, the Thai people have earned their country’s nickname – “The Land of Smiles.” On September 24th, 2024, this gorgeous kingdom’s progressive reputation skyrocketed as people awoke to the exciting news that King Maha Vajiralongkorn officially signed same-sex marriage into law.

It’s no secret that Thailand is a tropical paradise rich with culture, life, and history. Each region offers a different landscape and intriguing energy. Now that you can have the most romantic and exotic destination wedding, why not keep the celebration going with a honeymoon adventure across the country? Here are a few unique places and activities off the beaten path for LGBTQ+ couples to experience together.

First up: Bangkok!

Hidden Canal Tour: Sola Powered Boats

The solar boat at night with people wearing traditional Thai garb

Taking a boat tour of Bangkok is one of the most exciting and unique ways to experience the soul of this sprawling metropolis. Traditionally traversed in the famous long-tail motorboats, now there’s a much smoother option to see the canals. Solar-powered boats are the way of the future because of their environmental benefits and the tranquility they bring to river travel without a loud engine and stinky gas fumes.

The owner, ironically named Sun, is friendly and thoughtful. He provides tasty juices and teas while sailing gently around gleaming temples and historical sights. His small fleet of boats weaves through Bangkok’s canals and waterways, allowing you to explore the city through a unique and intimate lens.

People’s homes are built directly on the water, hovering inches above it on stilts. As you pass by, you’ll get to witness the ebb and flow of a morning in Thailand; glimpse a pair of old women reading the paper while sharing tea, catch mothers hanging laundry up to dry while their babies toddle around on uneven wood floors, notice a father teaching his young son how to fish. The river is a central point for many in Bangkok, and the best way to see it is on a sun-powered boat. Book with Sun through Facebook and get ready for a serene adventure.

Chinatown treats

Bangkok is a vibrant and lively city famous for incredible food, great entertainment, and hundreds of temples and ancient architecture. With the largest Chinese population outside of China, it’s no surprise that a night in Bangkok’s Chinatown is one to remember.

Have you ever tasted a Michelin-starred donut? On the streets of Chinatown, you can! Served directly from the humble food cart Pa Tong Go Savoey, these fire-kissed morsels are an incredible treat to split with your spouse. Smothered in flavorful and traditionally Thai custards, these bite-sized pieces of perfection are a great snack to enjoy while exploring the hubbub of the streets. You’ll be dreaming about another bite for months afterward.

Queens high in the sky

Finish the night off with a bang at one of the hottest drag shows in town. House of Heals is a moody and elegant lounge on the top floor of the towering Renaissance Hotel skyscraper. Serving fierce lewks and tasty cocktails, this inclusive club offers nightly shows with local Thai queens, some of whom have been contestants on Ru Paul’s Drag Race: Thailand. What makes this show truly unique is the live band accompanying many of the acts and the exceptional light show, along with incredible lip-synced performances and vivacious queens.

Next Stop: Chiang Mai

The enchanting northern province of Chiang Mai boasts lush, vibrant jungles, friendly and talented artisans, and immersive local experiences. Even though it’s the second largest city in Thailand, Chiang Mai offers a slower pace and gentler energy than Bangkok. You’ll find no skyscrapers or monolithic shopping malls here; you’ll be surrounded by art and handicrafts, locally sourced food, and strong, supportive communities.

Spa Day!

An elegant spa room with a massage bed and bathtub

After so much travel and excitement, you and your partner deserve a little R&R. Treat yourselves to an afternoon of upscale pampering at the Zira Massage and Wellness Spa. This elite facility provides a wide range of services from highly experienced and knowledgeable technicians. Sip on butterfly pea tea as you peruse the extensive menu of wellness treatments. Offering everything from traditional Thai massage and body scrubs/wraps to hydrotherapy, regardless of what you decide, you’ll leave refreshed and rejuvenated.

The majestic exterior exudes a perfect balance of old-world charm and modern sensibility. You’ll find stunning facilities kept in pristine condition as you’re guided through the glittering courtyard, complete with a mystical koi pond and glowing lanterns. The staff here are so welcoming and professional that you will feel immediately at ease when you step through the doors.

Riverside honeymoon luxury

The elegant grounds of Na Nirand at night. The bungalows are lit gently and the great tree is reflected in the water of the pool

It wouldn’t be a honeymoon without a few nights at a chic 5-star resort. Na Nirand is an upscale colonial-style hotel with private suites fit for a king. Overlooking the Ping River, this sophisticated stay features a stunning outdoor pool, an elegant wine bar and restaurant, and a majestic 100-year-old rain tree that shades the grounds. If honeymoon romance is what you’re after, then you can’t do better than the incredible amenities and exemplary service at Na Nirand.

The romantic rooms are adorned with locally made furniture and handicrafts, giving each one a unique and personalized design. Some packages even include butler service so you and your love can relax in style. When you feel rested and ready for your next adventure, take a 10-minute walk to the famous Chiang Mai Night Bazaar.

Sunday street fair

Things aren’t always mellow in Chiang Mai. The Sunday night market is well-known as the best place for shopping and souvenirs in Thailand and as a packed party spot. Throngs of young folks head to the stage where live music floods the brightly lit, bustling streets as vendors and artisans chat while reclining behind their wares. Unlike many markets worldwide, where sellers pounce on any traveler who stops to peruse, the people here seem happy to converse with their neighbors and share their unique art with the world. The spirited and jubilant energy of Chiang Mai is infectious, filling you with a strong sense of community and calm, even in the wild streets of the packed night air.

Finish strong in Krabi

The southern region of Krabi Noi is the tropical paradise everyone dreams of when they think of Thailand. Quintessential white sand beaches, fresh coconuts, and some of the most awe-inspiring sunsets on the planet await you. Surrounded by some of the world’s most famous and frequently filmed islands, there’s plenty of outdoor excitement to experience on the crystal clear waves.

Tropical honeymoon haven

The gorgeous grounds of Rayavadee Resort
Rayavadee’s Natural Setting

Although it might seem foolish to go to Krabi and not experience firsthand the incredible natural wonders of the seaside region, we wouldn’t blame you if you and your partner spent all your time exploring the premier Rayavadee Resort. Situated on a tranquil peninsula, this exclusive stay is straight out of White Lotus.

The serene grounds are dappled with trees and wildlife (don’t feed the monkeys!), with stone paths winding through the tropical acreage. When you arrive, the professional staff welcomes you as you disembark from the speed boat onto the sandy shore. Immediately, you are greeted with the sights and sounds of island adventure. People rock climb on the lofty cliffs that form the peninsula’s tip, while further along the shore, a small village bustles with locals and travelers.

Rayavadee offers guests private 2-story bungalows, tastefully and elegantly decorated and artfully set up for the ultimate vacation experience. Every detail has been thoughtfully orchestrated, from the slippers and flip-flops waiting for you to the incredibly scented body lotion (don’t worry, they sell more in the gift shop). A sense of luxury and relaxation is around every corner. After you unpack and break into the comfiest bed ever, head to the pool for unparalleled sights and a leisurely afternoon. Surrounded by stunning cliff faces and incredible views of Railey Beach, few places are as beautiful and mind-blowing as the pool of Rayavadee Resort.

The stunning view from the pool at Rayavadee Resort

No honeymoon would be complete without a romantic dinner overlooking the stunning sunset-painted ocean. The Grotto at Rayavadee is widely considered one of the world’s most romantic and memorable restaurants. Several small tables face the ocean below ancient limestone cliffs, allowing guests to experience the inspired and locally sourced cuisine with the ultimate view. It simply needs to be seen to be fully appreciated, and you and your love will remember it for the rest of your days together.
