The quinceañera is a Latino coming-of-age tradition and the Los Angeles LGBT Center is giving it a queer twist during National Hispanic Heritage Month.

Their annual Queerceañera, or Queerce, will spotlight LA’s diverse queer, Latinx diasporic experiences with a wide range of activations, including a royal court featuring beloved RuPaul’s Drag Race alumni and other celebrities.

“I’m a gay, Afro-Latino performance artist from the South Bronx–baby, there’s no part of me that isn’t proud of where I come from and where I am going. Los Angeles is now my second home; I’m so honored to accept this year’s Queerceañera title and share my story, dreams, and love with my community–mi gente,” said drag superstar and honoree Kandy Muse.

The traditional quinceañera, celebrated when a girl is 15 years old, involves a big, elaborate dress, a party for family and friends, photos, and a glow-up. Queerce is a lively, culturally immersive experience that blends traditional customs with a modern twist that breaks the rigid gender norms.

Tiaras, gowns, and lashes will get the Hollywood treatment. Alongside a heartwarming stage program in Renberg Theatre, guests will enjoy an editorial portrait studio, a booming dance floor, and complimentary food rooted in Latin flavors. The evening will conclude with an after-party offering cocktails and a special ‘court’ dance with LA-nightlife-favorite Queerchata.

The first 100 guests to check in will receive free food vouchers. The event is open to all ages; guests 21+ will receive a wristband at the door.

The event benefits Mi Centro, a sanctuary for Latinx LGBTQ+ individuals in Boyle Heights and surrounding eastside communities formed in partnership between the Los Angeles LGBT Center and Latino Equality Alliance.
