As the world becomes more aware of travel’s environmental impacts on our planet, adopting eco-friendly practices has never been more critical. This article offers practical tips for minimizing the environmental footprint of your trips, from choosing sustainable transportation options to making conscious decisions about accommodations and activities. By implementing these strategies, you can enjoy your adventures while helping preserve the planet for future generations.

Planning your trip

Choose eco-conscious destinations

Support places that prioritize sustainability and conservation. Many resorts and hotels are beginning to transition to eco-friendly practices, with many leading the charge with guest beach clean-up initiatives, reducing single-use plastics, and investing in alternative forms of energy.

Some destinations, like the Inn by the Sea in Maine, offer ecology walks and eco-oriented programs for guests to enjoy and explore. A huge part of an eco-conscious hotel is a commitment to supporting locally sourced products and maintaining balance with the land by using energy-efficient fixtures and recycling initiatives.

Transportation

Opt for green transportation

As tempting as it is to simply pull out your phone and open up Uber or Lyft, using alternative forms to get around can have a big impact on your carbon footprint. By utilizing public transportation, biking, or walking you’ll minimize your influence on emissions during your stay.

Obviously, this recommendation is less important than safety. If you’re unfamiliar with the area or feel you’re in danger at any point, use whatever you need to get to a safe place as quickly as possible.

However, when all goes smoothly, public transit and other eco-friendly forms of travel can be a fantastic way to get to know a place. Many cities and countries around the world have implemented wonderfully accessible transit options in addition to eco-conscious initiatives.

Packing smart

Use eco-friendly/reusable packing materials

A little effort up front goes a long way. When preparing for your trip, consider investing in reusable/refillable toiletry kits and eco-friendly packing options. Avoid utilizing single-use plastics both in your suitcase and at your destination.

If you’re like me and love drinking out of a straw but feel guilty when handed a plastic one at a restaurant, and can’t stand the feel of the paper options, buy yourself a sleek set of metal straws to take on your travels!

Single-use plastic water bottles produce 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year. Consider treating yourself to an insulated reusable water bottle; your water will stay ice cold and you can decorate it with your favorite stickers!

During your stay

Be energy-conscious

Sometimes when we’re on vacation we don’t think about turning off the lights or air conditioning. However, remembering these small details will have a huge impact on your individual carbon footprint. Use energy-efficient modes and ask accommodations about their green practices; many will have a comprehensive guide to their efforts and facilities.

Support local and respect natural and cultural environments

Going green during your travels can be as easy as eating at local, farm-to-table restaurants in the area. Not only will you be supporting the local economy and business owners, but you will also experience things that chain restaurants and shops do not offer.

Get to know the local customs and art styles by purchasing your souvenirs from local artisans and eco-friendly stores.

This goes without saying, but we’re saying it anyway- no matter where you go, adopt the simple principle of “leave no trace”. Pick up your trash, return things to the way you found them, and show as much respect to the land and its locals as they have shown you.

Embracing eco-friendly travel practices is essential for mitigating the environmental impact of our journeys and preserving the natural beauty of our planet. By making conscious choices about transportation, accommodation, and activities, you can significantly reduce your carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future.

We encourage you to start integrating these tips into your travel plans and be a part of the growing movement toward responsible tourism. Begin planning your next adventure with sustainability in mind, and make a positive impact with every mile you travel.
