dog's POV

I took my hoomans to a pet-friendly hotel for a romantic getaway. Here’s how it went.

International Dog Day was this Monday, but I celebrated a little early. The Kimpton Virgilio opened recently in Mexico City and they’re pet-friendly, so I knew I could take my hoomans with me.

The hotel offers a “couple’s getaway” weekend offer, and I told them that was why we were going. They totally bought it.

Kimpton helped me to keep up the charade by putting a giant bouquet of roses, chocolates, and a bottle of champagne in the room. They even took a cute photo of them from Instagram and framed it. They really made them feel special. The hoomans even got their own bed.

Of course, Angel, the pet concierge, welcomed me at the door. After registering at the front desk, he escorted me to my room. A card to greet me lay on my bed, along with a light lunch of oatmeal treats and this cute carrot and gelatin concoction shaped like a bone.

Once I’d snacked, Angel took me to the pool, where the staff welcomed me to the terrace and got me a chair. I caught some rays and snoozed while the pets ate their lunches and played in the water. You know hoomans; they’re like labradors. They can’t stay out of puddles.

After I woke up, I took them to the nearby park to enjoy the quiet, and then I walked them through a tianguis, an open-air market where hoomans set up small houses and share toys, treats, and outfits in exchange for pieces of paper. I know it’s strange, but it’s what they do.

When we returned to the room, I sent them off to the bath with the bottle of champagne. They played in the water again (I swear, they’re practically retrievers) and licked each other’s faces. I took another nap to build up my energy for dinner at Pepe Mesa Española, the hotel’s restaurant.

The chef greeted me at the table like the queen I am, of course. While the hoomans ate their roasted leek, mussels, pan de tomate, and a giant ribeye steak, the chef brought me a special dish of chicken and vegetables in a delicious sauce.

For some reason, the hoomans insisted on filming everything all weekend and all the other pets kept looking at me like I was a celebrity. When the chef lifted the glass dome on my dinner, they smacked their paws together and several of them came over to scratch my head. That was nice and felt really good too.

After dinner, I was so full that I went back upstairs to my room and passed out on the hoomans’ bed. How embarrassing! Thankfully, they didn’t seem to mind and snuggled with me all night. It was almost as good as a dog pile.

The next morning, I let the hoomans have breakfast and took them for another walk in the park before we checked out. When I approached the front desk, everyone greeted me by name and waved goodbye as I left.

I sat outside on the sidewalk for a few minutes before we left and thought about my in-town getaway with the hoomans. The hotel staff let the hoomans play in the pool, eat lots of food, gave them their own bed, provided special personalized amenities, and everyone acknowledged their presence and treated them like family too.

Kimpton really is pet-friendly.
