Lesbian bars have long been a cornerstone of the LGBTQ+ community, providing safe spaces for socializing, organizing, and fostering a sense of belonging. However, the number of bars in the US has significantly dwindled over the years.

In the late 1980s, approximately 200 of these bars were located across the United States. These bars were not just places to drink and dance but crucial for community building and activism. During the AIDS crisis, gay and lesbian bars offered health information and a place to organize around issues like unemployment and homelessness.
Several factors have contributed to their decline. Societal changes, including greater LGBTQ+ acceptance, the rise of the internet, and a more gender-fluid understanding of identity, have all played a role. Additionally, economic pressures such as the wage gap and urban gentrification have made it difficult for these bars to stay open.

Current state of lesbian bars in the US
As of publishing this in July 2024, there are only 33 operational lesbian bars in the United States, according to the Lesbian Bar Project. This starkly contrasts the hundreds that existed a few decades ago.
The Lesbian Bar Project, launched in 2020 by filmmakers Elina Street and Erica Rose, provides financial support and raises awareness about the importance of these spaces.
Why lesbian bars matter
Lesbian bars have been sanctuaries for marginalized individuals. In the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s, they offered safety and community in an otherwise hostile world.
The Lesbian Bar Project has raised significant funds to support the remaining bars. In 2020, a 30-day fundraising campaign raised $260,000, distributed among participating bars. New queer spaces are also emerging that reflect the evolving needs of the LGBTQ+ community.
The fight continues
The decline of lesbian bars in the United States is a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by marginalized communities. However, the successful efforts to revive and preserve these spaces highlight their enduring importance.
As the LGBTQ+ community continues to evolve, so must the spaces that serve them, ensuring they remain safe, inclusive, and vibrant hubs of community and activism.
