FOMO-friendly

Hawaii’s Top 5 Most Instagrammable Beaches

Little Beach, Maui
The beautiful Little Beach, Maui

What can be better than spending the afternoon at one of Hawaii’s many picturesque beaches, soaking up rays on sun-kissed sands and splashing around in crystal clear waters? Snapping photos of you living your best self in this tropical paradise to slather across your social media, obviously. Nothing is sweeter than making your besties and frenemies gag on your fabulosity with a pang of FOMO.

To help you find the ideal beachy backdrops to snag some choice IG images, we’ve kiki’ed with Kris Labang, owner of Hawaii Wedding Photography, about the most popular destinations in the Aloha State. Remember the adage, “Pics, or it didn’t happen.”

Lanikai Beach

Lanikai has been described as the most beautiful beach on O’ahu. It’s merely a 45 minute schlep from Honolulu and is ideal for snorkeling, swimming, and kayaking.

“There are also plenty of scenic walks where you could take pictures,” Kris informed us. He also warned, “However, parking is limited, and the local amenities are sparse.”

Those brave enough to endure those minor inconveniences may be treated to a major star sighting.

“It’s so beautiful that superstar Rihanna often comes here on vacation, staying at the Paul Mitchell Estate.”

Kailua Beach

With its history of attracting notable patrons, this is another great beach for star-struck queer travelers.

“Barack Obama grew up in Honolulu but rented a beach house here during his presidency,” said Kris. “Superstar couple Beyonce and Jay-Z also own a local private estate here.”

If it’s good enough for Queen Bey, it’s def good enough for your IG feed.

Hanauma Bay

This beach exudes the best of Hawaii’s unique natural beauty. Hanauma Bay was shaped by volcanic forces millions of years ago, but it’s now a peaceful marine sanctuary. If you arrive between December and April, you may catch a glimpse of humpback whales in the bay, a center for conservation and a goldmine for keen photographers. Kris advises hitting this beach early to catch the sunrise, which will also put you in this breathtaking location during “golden hour,” providing the best possible lighting.

“There are also plenty of scenic walks where you could take pictures,” he added.

Hanalei Bay

“People who love food, mai tais, and live music will enjoy the Tahiti Nui restaurant and bar,” said Kris. “If you watched the movie ‘The Descendants’, you’ll have seen George Clooney in this very bar!”

At Hanalei Bay, vacationers can explore and swim, or join the kayakers, stand-up paddle boarders, and boaters. Put safety first, however, and only venture out when the waters are calm.

“Dwayne Johnson and Lauren Hashian got married in Hawaii,” Kris informed us. “And so did Miles Teller and Keleigh Sperry. You’ll understand why Instagrammers so love these beaches.”

Little Beach

Little Beach, Maui

Also known as Puʻu Olai, this pocket of picturesque perfection is considered one of the best gay clothing-optional beaches in the world. Occupying a 660-foot stretch of shoreline in Makena State Park, it’s separated from Big Beach by a steep lava outcropping. It is also one of the few places in Hawaii that’s nudist-friendly, albeit only on Sundays. In addition to its body positivity, Little Beach is also a hub for fire dancing and drum circles. We suggest cropping out any naughty bits before posting on IG to avoid getting flagged. And always ask permission when snapping a picture of others when they are going au naturel. Nothing is sexier than consent.
